The Science Behind Our Calculator

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the gold standard for calculating BMR. This equation takes into account your gender, age, weight, and height to determine how many calories your body needs at complete rest.

For men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5

For women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

Your TDEE is calculated by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor that corresponds to your lifestyle:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR × 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise 1-3 days/week): BMR × 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise 3-5 days/week): BMR × 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise 6-7 days/week): BMR × 1.725
  • Extra active (very hard exercise & physical job): BMR × 1.9

Macronutrient Distribution

Our macronutrient recommendations are based on your goals:

  • Weight loss: Higher protein (40%), moderate fat (30%), lower carbs (30%)
  • Weight maintenance: Balanced distribution with protein (30%), fat (30%), and carbs (40%)
  • Weight gain: Moderate protein (30%), lower fat (20%), higher carbs (50%)

These distributions are designed to support your goals while ensuring you receive adequate nutrition.
